About Us

Our Story

A Parish Family Since 1863

St. Philip Neri Catholic Church has stood at the heart of Smethwick for over 160 years — a home for worship, welcome, and community that has grown and changed alongside the people it serves. Named for St. Philip Neri, the joyful founder of the Oratorian tradition, our parish carries forward his spirit of warmth, humility and genuine care for one another.

Our History

From a converted stable to a beautifully consecrated church, our story has been shaped by dedicated priests, generous parishioners, and an enduring community of faith.

  1. 1863

    A Parish is Founded

Fr. Edward Caswall of the Birmingham Oratory — a noted hymn-writer and convert — began the mission in Smethwick, opening a small school-chapel that served the area's growing Catholic community.

  2. 1882

    Fr. Charles Ryder Arrives

Fr. Ryder, grandson of the Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry, became parish priest and dedicated much of his own means and thirty years of ministry to building the church we know today.

  3. 1893

    The Church Opens

The foundation stone, laid by Bishop Ilsley in 1892, gave rise to a nave completed and opened within a year — supported by generous subscribers including Cardinal Newman himself.

  4. 1904 – 1908

    The Chapels Are Completed

The Lady Chapel and sacristies were added in 1904, followed by the Sacred Heart Chapel in 1908, enriching the sanctuary with the marble, stone and mosaic work still visible today.

  5. 1936

    Consecration

Archbishop Thomas Williams formally consecrated the completed church on 25th June 1936, marking the culmination of decades of parish devotion and sacrifice.

  6. 2007 – Today

In the Care of the Spiritans

Since 2007, the parish has been administered by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans), continuing a tradition of missionary zeal and warm, welcoming community life.

A Living Landmark

Built in a transitional Romanesque-Gothic style from brick and terracotta, our church reflects the craftsmanship of the turn of the twentieth century. Inside, the sanctuary and transepts are richly adorned in marble, stone and mosaic — much of it given by Fr. Ryder himself or in his memory. It remains one of Smethwick's most treasured buildings, a quiet witness to the faith of those who built it and those who continue to worship within its walls.

What We Stand For

Faith

Rooted in the Sacraments and the Mass, our parish family gathers each week to worship, pray and grow together in Christ.

Community

From our primary school to our parish groups, we are a diverse, welcoming family that reflects the many cultures and stories of Smethwick.

Service

Following the example of St. Philip Neri, we seek to serve our neighbours — especially the newest and most vulnerable members of our community.

Heritage

Our church stands as a testament to the sacrifice of generations before us, and we are committed stewards of this beautiful, historic place of worship.

St. Philip's Catholic Primary School

Our parish is proud to be served by St. Philip's Catholic Primary School, the educational arm of our community — nurturing children in faith and learning, and building bridges between our church and the wider Smethwick community.
